About Leah

Hailing from South Carolina, Leah Misano is a freelance dance and movement artist currently based in Cambridge, MA. Having graduated from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee in 2021, she has found an artistic home in the Boston area. Leah joined the ranks of Whim W’Him Seattle Contemporary Dance for their 2022/2023 season.

Throughout her dance life, Leah has been a part of several new creations including that of Rauf “Rubberlegz” Yasit, Emilie Leriche, Nicole von Arx, Joseph Toonga, and several others. Coming from a strong ballet foundation, Leah finds herself most interested in the cross section between traditional Western concert dance and street dance: adopting ideas about flow from Latin American contemporary dance and methodology from breakers and hip hop artists and layering it with her own movement experience.

Since July 2023, Leah has returned to her artistic home in Boston and joined faculty at Northeast School of Ballet and Boston Conservatory at Berklee as an assistant professor as well as continuing to engage in performance work and dive into her own choreography and movement practice.

Artist Statement

It’s always about the human experience. Everything stripped down to its bare bones is about our want, need, and drive to connect to others.  Inherently everything created by humans has some form of humanity that exists within it. Rather if we mean it or not, there is always something there. We look to find meaning in everything we do and we want to find a reason for something to exist - for our existence. This never ending search for our care and passion is what keeps us moving forward. When we have intentions for something to never be more than what it is, we are just holding back our own emotional self to protect ourselves from the harshness of the world around us. I want to be fearless and loving and giving and soft and rough and selfish. I want to be everything always and everything between those things. Nothing is ever black and white.
